Blame America First
Earlier in the week Mr. Sandefur referenced a post by Tom Palmer that took issue with an entry on lewrockwell.com. In the entry was a picture of two destroyed tanks (one of which was recently destroyed by insurgents in Fallujah) with a caption “A toast to the defeat of the evil empire - A prayer for the poor fallen souls.” Yesterday there was more of the same, and again today Dr. Palmer has a post up on the subject.
In an email Dr. Palmer sent me a few weeks ago, he made it clear that while he does not enjoy engaging in these battles, someone needs to take on these individuals who are blinded by hatred for the United States. It seems the task has fallen to him, and while in a more perfect world he could devote his talents to more important issues, I’m glad there is someone of his caliber to challenge them.
Now, I don’t know if the editors over at TIA Daily have been keeping up on this back and forth, but earlier this week they republished a piece from over 20 years ago by Peter Schwartz, also critical of the this faction of the libertarian movement. I found this portion referencing Justin Raimondo particularly interesting:
America is far more contemptible than even the Soviet Union, according to the Libertarian definition of liberty. The Soviets "have repeatedly proclaimed their unconditional support of a freeze and mutual arms reduction.... The question is not: can we trust the Soviets? The real question is: given a freeze agreement, can the US be trusted to keep it?" says Raimondo.
Apparently this has been going on for quite a while yet, still today, the word ‘Libertarian’ continues to mean different things to different people.
