The Drug War is not just a failure. It is the most spectacularly disastrous failure in the history of American politics. It is the costliest and most futile effort our federal government has ever undertaken; it has done irreparable damage to our Constitution, it has wasted countless millions of precious dollars, and it has cost thousands and thousands of lives, all in the pursuit of the ultimately immoral goal of dictating to people what they may do with their own bodies. Leading Latin American politicians are begging for relief from this useless and bloody quest; at least two Presidents of the United States and the former governor of California are themselves known marijuana users; and conservative leaders like William F. Buckley and, now, Pat Robertson, have confessed the drug war a pointless waste of time, money, and lives. When even Pat Robertson thinks you are crazy, it is time to rethink your position. The unwinnable, illegal, immoral war on drugs must end now.
