I was ready for John Fogerty to be okay. That’s how he’s always been in his solo work. I kinda like Premonition and Centerfield and Blue Moon Swamp, but they’re just not Creedence. For one thing, he doesn’t have the rough Creedence voice—not a big deal; he’s 59, right? And the rave concert reviews I’ve read I assumed were just overly enthusiastic puffing from fans.
Well, it turns out he’s really that good! He can still do it; he does still have the voice, and he can do a truly great concert. Last night you actually felt you were at a Creedence Clearwater Revival concert. He played the harmonica! He played Creedence songs you never hear anymore, like “Bootleg,” and “Wrote A Song for Everyone” (a new arrangement of the latter, which is lovely) and “Sweet Hitchhiker.” He even played “Keep on Chooglin’” and “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” and he was great! When he played the harmonica part on “Chooglin,’” for an instant it looked like it was 1969.
It was honestly that good. Fogerty is playing tonight in Orange County, and the rest of his itinerary is here. If you can go, do it!
Update: Here’s the set list from the L.A. concert.
