No Left Turns pointed out these pictures of the memorial to Flight 93, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As No Left Turns points out, this memorial was built entirely by volunteer citizens on their own.
This ought to remain the only memorial at Shanksville. It is vastly superior to anything a government commission could create. The reason Flight 93 is such a heroic, American story is that those people acted on their own; thought for themselves. The government wasn’t there to help them; they chose to do what they had to do. What could possibly be a better commemoration of that fact than a monument put together by volunteers who choose to visit the site and leave something behind? A giant, tax-funded marble building would be a cold, uninteresting tribute from bureaucrats following the rules—just the opposite of what Flight 93’s memory means. (More pictures here.)
