I’ve been delighted to receive several emails from folks who enjoyed my series of posts on the differences between conservatism and libertarianism (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII).
If you are a conservative, and you find yourself uncomfortable with the way many conservative leaders, like Paul or Robert Bork, attack the founding fathers, or if you are made uncomfortable by their statements that you owe a moral duty to live in whatever way contributes to the greater good—if you believe that conservatism is about individual freedom—then I encourage you to consider the possibility that you may be a libertarian, without knowing it. Yes, there are some crackpots who call themselves libertarians, who may have scared you off, and you may have been led to think that libertarians are just Democrats on drugs. This is not true, though. Please take a look at some of the basic works on what libertarianism really is. Check out this short video, or read Rose Wilder Lane’s The Discovery of Freedom, or Charles Murray’s What It Means To Be A Libertarian. These books are easy to read, and you will not be committing yourself to anything. Just see if you maybe agree with them.
I’d be happy to answer any serious emails.
