Slithery D has passed on to me the latest thing:
Behold, the Caesar’s Bath meme! List five things that people in your circle of friends or peer group are wild about, but you can’t really understand the fuss over. To use the words of Caesar (from History of the World Part I), “Nice. Nice. Not thrilling . . . but nice.”
This is actually pretty easy. There’s lots I don’t care about!
1) Sports. This is the big one. I entirely lack the sports gene. I don’t know anything about football, basketball, golf, or tennis, and the last time I was a baseball fan, Steve Garvey was still a Dodger. (I can enjoy a baseball game once every few years, but that’s it.) It is as alien to me that someone could invest passion in sports as it is to most people that I could invest passion in the life and times of Sir Edward Coke. (To be clear: playing sports is different. If you play, I can understand caring. But just watching?)
2) Cars. I like my car, and I think they’re wonderful devices, but I don’t get excited about them; certainly not by their mechanics, or by old ones. I think the new Ford Thunderbird is gorgeous, and I want one. But otherwise, I don’t know or care much about cars.
3) Reality television. Erin recently got me into American Idol, and I actually enjoy it now. But I’ve never seen any other reality show in my life. (And Idol doesn’t really count, I don’t think.) I don’t even care enough to be bothered by the trend.
4) Computers. Imagine! But the same principle applies here as in the car situation. As long as they work, that’s great. But how they work, or why they don’t, or how to get them to work better…my mind immediately beams away when these issues come up.
5) Brian Leiter. Meh.
I guess I’ll pass this on to Sarah Hempel.
