Future historians, I believe, will consider today to be an important landmark. The FDA has given the green light to the sale of irradiated produce, despite the utterly baseless fears of a large segment of the population that food irradiation is somehow bad for you. These fears are nothing more than superstition. Irradiating food is an inexpensive, efficient, and safe way of killing the microorganisms that feed on, and contribute to the decay of, produce. It no more makes food radioactive than microwaving does. And in a world where millions still do not get enough to eat, any technology that can prolong the freshness of food should be celebrated. This day will effectively mark the saving of countless lives.
Michael Fumento has some good, if somewhat old, articles on food irradiation here.
