Daniel Mitchell points to this article about the rewards Greek athletes can expect for winning a medal in the Olympics: "a comfortable civil service job, usually as an officer in the military."

Sounds pretty dumb, but it is actually an old tradition: the Athenians lodged and fed athletic heroes at public expense, and Socrates himself asked for similar handouts as a reward for his obnoxious chatter....
