I sent the following letter to President Obama today:
Dear Mr. President,
During your campaign for the presidency you took what I consider to be both a courageous and decent stand against the policy of the Drug Enforcement Agency of raiding medical marijuana clinics in those states where marijuana is legal by prescription. This cruel and unnecessary policy violates the constitutional sovereignty of the states, deprives ill patients of a drug that can alleviate their agony, and intimidates many who might otherwise find in marijuana a respite that cannot be adequately supplied by alternative treatments.
Yet these raids continue.
After a recent such incident, your spokesman reiterated your promise to stop these raids. But I am sorry to say that no action has been taken in the month since you took office, and you said nothing about it in your recent speech to Congress.
Mr. President, it would require only an executive order from your pen to stop these raids. Such an order would be an exceedingly simple thing for your staff to prepare. In the name of simple humanity, I beg you to fulfill your promise and issue that order. Where voters have legalized the use of this safe and effective alternative, patients and suppliers should not be at risk of intrusion, search, arrest, prosecution, and violence.
Yours most sincerely,
Timothy Sandefur
We'll see if I get a reply.
