I was deeply saddened to learn today (four months after the fact) of the death of the brilliant young blues guitarist, Corey Osborn.
I was privileged to hear Osborn play at B.B. King's in Memphis a few years ago, and blogged about it here. I predicted then that he would make a big name for himself in blues, and he did: opening for B.B. King himself. There are a few low-quality videos of him playing on YouTube, but they don't really capture his dynamism and brilliant range of style. There are some much better, but shorter, clips on his MySpace page. You can still get his album on CD Baby, but like most blues musicians, he was much better in live performance than in the studio.
After I blogged about him, he wrote me a couple times to tell me about his career, and I looked forward to the opportunity to hear him again next time I might be in Memphis. But he died at Thanksgiving in a car wreck. He was only 23 years old. A light that vanishes, never to be seen again.
In his honor, here's Jimmie Lee Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, and Robert Randolph with "Six Strings Down":
