I have long believed that music is not a matter of subjective taste, but that its expressive qualities are in some sense objective: that is, that people don't just feel about music the way they're taught to feel, but instead music is in some sense "truly" sad or "truly" happy. Here's some very interesting evidence supporting that view. The Mafa people of Cameroon, about as culturally isolated as you can get, were asked to rate the mood they felt when listening to certain music clips. The result: "Both Western and non-Western listeners recognized the intended emotion at rates significantly higher than chance (the dotted line on the chart). So even people who've never been exposed to Western music can understand the intended emotion."
