The Theodore Roethke House

Who knew? The home of poet Theodore Roethke, a favorite of mine, is now a museum open to the public. I wouldn't have thought there were many people out there who knew or cared who Roethke was.

Retribution

In an airport recently I picked up a copy of Max Hastings' book Retribution, (its original and better title is Nemesis), a book about the conclusion of the war against Japan in 1944-45. Normally I don't care for military history, which I often find hard to keep straight. But this is simply one of the best written books I have ever read. Hastings easily belongs in the ranks of great prose stylists who composed history--Thucydides, Macaulay... His command of the language alone is so beautiful that the book is truly compulsive reading. Aside from that, his judgments are sound, his marshalling of statistics extremely convincing. It is Pulitzer quality work. I know I'll be reading more of his books.
