I forgot to link this earlier: an update on whether the American Cancer Society rejected a contribution from the atheist Foundation Beyond Belief.
Update: Having looked at this only briefly (and the ACS' Facebook page where they respond to it) it looks to me like the most likely explanation is, indeed, a misunderstanding about various types of participants in their program, and not like an intentional effort to discriminate against atheists. The ACS' previous willingness to allow FBB to participate in the past, as well as their willingness to allow FBB to participate in a new way now and in the future, makes it hard to believe this was really an effort to placate religious donors by excluding FBB. Having experienced anti-atheist sentiment often in my life, I can understand why many atheists have concluded otherwise, as I did, at first, but it just seems to me that the most likely explanation here is some sort of error, or a failure to quickly implement a new program change at ACS, rather than discriminatory intent. I therefore apologize to ACS for my hasty conclusion.
