Perhaps some will now at last glimpse what moral and cultural relativism really means: the abandonment of the great human achievements that have taken us so long to create. The freedom of speech is just "constitutional symbolism" that is "paralyz[ing]" us. We should grow up and allow "foreign policy interests" to justify government-imposed "restrictions on speech." When rights are just privileges that the collective gives to you, then the collective can take them away, and what's the big deal?
Scott Lemieux has more here.
How long can your constitutional rights survive when intellectuals reject them as merely pigheaded idolatry?
What do you say, pigheaded George Mason? "No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people, but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue, and by frequent recurrence to fundamental principles."
