Rejecting the principles of the Declaration of Independence is enough to make any man my personal enemy, regardless of whatever other qualities he may have. If you do not believe that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with inalienable rights, that government exists to protect those rights, and that all people have the right to rebel against oppressive government, then you do not simply differ in opinion from me; you regard me as a being fit for servitude—as a subject rather than a citizen—as a creature of the state rather than a fellow man deserving of respect and privacy. If you believe that I have no basic right to liberty, but that the majority may choose what “rights” to give me as a matter of privilege, then you are a direct personal threat to me, my family, my friends, and my society. In such circumstances, I will accord you the respect that you deny to me—I will not assault you or deprive you of your freedom—but I will not pretend to be your friend, or sit politely by while you demean the basic principles on which all free societies depend.
