I was happy to encounter a reference to my favorite painter, John Singer Sargent, in the opening passages of the Supreme Court's decision in Bond v. United States. The case involves chemical weapons. The painting in question is one of his masterpieces, "Gassed" (1919):
I believe this is the first Sargent reference in the Supreme Court. And although Sargent was the society painter of his day and did portraits of many important people, including Presidents Roosevelt and Wilson, I don't think he ever painted any of the justices.
